Amplifying Experience

Description

Over the centuries, art, literature, and film have honed effective and recognised conventions to evoke, control, and amplify emotion. With the advent of new techniques, technology, and media—from video games to virtual reality—creators have the opportunity to create new conventions for new worlds. Drawing on my training as an urban interventionist and literary critic, I have been exploring how these conventions may emerge. Accordingly, I have been investigating the intensity of emotional responses across various aesthetic experiences through controlled experiments, with a particular focus on interactions with narrative, play, and the city.
